The U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) said in a post on X that its annual update of GDP and related statistics begins Wednesday. The agency described the update as part of its regular cycle of changes meant to better measure the U.S. economy. [1]
According to BEA's website, the national, industry and regional updates will begin on the same day, September 30, 2026, for the first time. BEA attributed this to improvements in concurrent production of its statistics. [2]
The national update covers gross domestic product, gross domestic income, GDP by industry and related statistics. BEA said the open period for revisions runs from the first quarter of 2021 through the first quarter of 2026. The reference year for index numbers and chained-dollar estimates stays at 2017. [2]
The regional update covers GDP and personal income by state and by county, along with personal consumption expenditures by state and related components. BEA said it will draw on new and revised data from federal agencies and other organizations. The state update will provide the first 2025 estimates based on more complete annual source data. BEA released preliminary 2025 state estimates on April 9, 2026, based solely on quarterly data. [2]
On September 30, BEA will also publish its third estimate of second-quarter 2026 GDP and the August personal income and outlays report. It said it will post a table relating current-dollar revisions to source data and conceptual changes, and that an article describing the update will follow in the Survey of Current Business. [2]
BEA said it also corrected some historical quarterly industry statistics for 2015 through 2018 in selected tables. It said these corrections do not change GDP or current-dollar measures. [2]
BEA said further releases are planned for October, including fixed assets accounts tables, and for December, including NIPA Table 2.9. [2]
