Google launches prototype satellite with four TPUs to test machine learning hardware in orbit

Google's Project Suncatcher research effort will test whether its AI chips can withstand space conditions, as a step toward possible orbital computing infrastructure.

What we know

  1. Google said it launched, in partnership with Planet, a prototype satellite carrying four TPUs on SpaceX's Transporter-18 rideshare mission. [1]
  2. Google described the launch as the first step of Project Suncatcher, a long-term research effort to see whether scalable machine learning infrastructure can be hosted in space. [1]
  3. Google said it will collect in-orbit data over the coming weeks on how the TPUs handle physical stress, radiation and extreme temperatures. [1]
  4. Google CEO Sundar Pichai called the launch successful and said the booster made another landing. [2]
  5. Not yet confirmed: Google has not said how the TPUs are performing in orbit. Its posts do not give a timeline for any operational space-based computing or say whether the research will lead to it.

Google said it has launched a prototype satellite carrying four tensor processing units (TPUs) into orbit, the first step in a research program called Project Suncatcher. The company announced the launch in a post on X on Thursday. [1]

Google said it launched the satellite in partnership with Planet. The satellite flew on SpaceX's Transporter-18 rideshare mission. [1]

Google described Project Suncatcher as a long-term research "moonshot" aimed at finding out whether scalable machine learning infrastructure could one day be hosted in space. [1]

The company said that over the coming weeks it will gather data in orbit on how the TPUs cope with physical stress, radiation and thermal extremes. Google said it will use what it learns to refine future designs. [1]

Google CEO Sundar Pichai wrote on X that he remembers the first meeting in which the team pitched the idea of putting compute in space. Pichai said the "successful launch" with Planet's prototype satellite shows "how far we've come...and how far there is to go." [2]

Pichai also thanked SpaceX for the ride and noted what the post called another "spectacular booster landing." [2]
