Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Russia carried out a large overnight attack on Ukraine that focused on energy infrastructure in Kyiv and the surrounding region, according to a post on X on Wednesday. [1]

Zelenskyy said the assault involved nearly 190 attack drones as well as ballistic missiles. He said residential buildings were also damaged, and that emergency services and repair crews have been working since the night to deal with the aftermath. [1]

According to Zelenskyy, a drone struck a grocery supermarket in Ivankovychi, where first responders were fighting a fire. In Kyiv, he said, a warehouse building was hit and one person was killed. He also reported strikes on critical infrastructure in the Zhytomyr, Mykolaiv, Kirovohrad and Rivne regions, and damage in the Odesa, Sumy, Kharkiv, Kherson and Cherkasy regions. [1]

Zelenskyy said fourteen people were injured nationwide and five were killed across the country as a result of the strikes. He said work continues to restore electricity and water where they are still out. [1]

The attack followed strikes on Monday night that, Zelenskyy said, damaged the depot at Kyiv-Pasazhyrskyi railway station, data centers, business centers and residential buildings in Kyiv, as well as an educational institution, a dormitory and two foreign vessels in the Odesa region. [2]

Zelenskyy said Ukrainian forces shot down some of the ballistic missiles but that others hit their targets. He thanked partners for recent air defense deliveries, including a NASAMS system and missiles from the United States and Norway, and a missile package from France and Germany. He said the need for such protection grows the closer winter gets. [1][2]

In a separate post on Tuesday, Zelenskyy said more than a hundred drones had been launched that day, just since the morning. As of 6 p.m., 29 of them were jet-powered, of which 18 were shot down. He said new talks on air defense and further support for Ukraine would take place this week, and that Ukraine is working with partners to secure missiles for Patriot systems. [3]
