Russian strike hits Ukraine's National Academy of Sciences building in Kyiv, Zelenskyy says

A Russian strike hit the building of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine in Kyiv on Monday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in a post on X. He said rescue crews were putting out a fire and searching for people who might be trapped inside. [1]

In a later post, Zelenskyy said emergency services were still working at the site of what he called a direct strike. [2]

Zelenskyy said Russian forces also struck a medical facility in the center of the capital that afternoon, and that first responders were working to put out the fire there. [2]

In his first post, Zelenskyy said a pharmaceutical company and gas stations in Kyiv were attacked on the same day. He said a business center in Dnipro was hit, and that civilian facilities, businesses and communications infrastructure in other cities and regions were targeted. He said people had been killed but did not give a total. [1]

Zelenskyy said Russia would face a response. He called on Ukraine's partners to increase pressure on what he described as the financing and production of Russia's weapons, and said the strikes should not be ignored. He wrote that he was counting on Europe, the United States and other partners. [1][2]

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said on X that science had become a target for Russia. She expressed sympathy for rescuers and for the families of victims of attacks across the country. She wrote that Europe was working harder than ever to strengthen Ukraine's defense. [3]
