The San Diego Padres beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 5-1 on Wednesday night and moved into sole possession of the top spot in the National League wild-card standings, according to the game recap. Manny Machado homered and drove in three runs. San Diego is 88-70. Los Angeles is 97-61. [1]
The Baltimore Orioles swept a doubleheader from the Toronto Blue Jays, winning both games 4-2. The first game was a makeup of a game from Sept. 22. Pete Alonso hit his 41st home run of the season, and Chris Bassitt took a shutout into the sixth inning. In the second game, Trey Gibson pitched into the seventh inning, and the recap said the win at least temporarily keeps Baltimore alive in the American League playoff race. The Orioles are 78-81. [1]
In the WNBA, the Atlanta Dream secured the No. 4 seed in the playoffs with an 83-65 win over the New York Liberty, which closed the regular season for both teams. Allisha Gray scored 24 points and Naz Hillmon added 16. Atlanta finished 30-14, and New York finished 26-18. [2]
MLB: The Miami Marlins beat the Chicago Cubs 3-2, so Chicago failed to clinch a playoff berth for the second straight night. Kyle Stowers homered for Miami. The Cubs are 87-71. [1]
The Atlanta Braves beat the Cincinnati Reds 3-2 in 10 innings on a Mauricio Dubón RBI single. Braves starter Chris Sale struck out 10 and reached 200 strikeouts for the season. Atlanta is 93-65. The Milwaukee Brewers (99-59) beat the Philadelphia Phillies 4-1 on solo homers by Christian Yelich and Brice Turang. [1]
The Seattle Mariners beat the Houston Astros 6-5 in 10 innings when Josh Naylor singled in Randy Arozarena. The Arizona Diamondbacks beat the Colorado Rockies 5-3, and both recaps said the winners kept their playoff hopes alive. The Kansas City Royals beat the Chicago White Sox 5-4 and delayed Chicago's bid for a postseason berth. [1]
Ben Rice hit his 40th and 41st home runs as the New York Yankees beat the Tampa Bay Rays 9-2. Ryan McMahon added a grand slam. In Boston, the Red Sox beat the Cleveland Guardians 1-0. Sonny Gray pitched six innings for his 18th win, tying Philadelphia's Cristopher Sánchez for the major league lead. [1]
WNBA: The Dallas Wings beat the Seattle Storm 103-91. Paige Bueckers scored 25 points. Jessica Shepard had 20 points, 11 rebounds and 12 assists for her league-leading sixth triple-double of the season. Dallas finished 27-17, and Seattle finished 8-36. [2]
