State Department calls Greenland agreement permanent and credits Trump and Rubio

The U.S. Department of State described a deal on Greenland as permanent in two posts on its @StateDept account on X on Friday, Oct. 2. Both posts were attributed to the department's spokesperson account, @StateDeptSPOX.[1][2]

In the first post, the spokesperson account said the agreement is permanent. It said the deal benefits the United States, is important to U.S. security and will make NATO allies more secure.[2]

In the second post, about ten minutes later, the account called the deal "a massive success." It said President Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio "got it done."[1]

The post said the agreement strengthens U.S. security and blocks non-NATO military bases. It also said the deal protects critical sectors from hostile foreign investment.[1]

The text of the posts does not name the other parties to the agreement. It also does not describe how the restrictions on bases and foreign investment would work, or say when the deal takes effect.

The benefits described are the State Department's own characterization of the deal and have not been independently verified.
