The U.S. Department of the Treasury said Oct. 1 that it is targeting Iran's rail and automotive conglomerates as part of what it calls Operation Economic Outcast. [1]

In a post on X, the department described the sectors as "some of the last significant elements" of what it called Iran's failing industrial infrastructure. [1]

Treasury said the Iranian regime and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps have coopted the country's automotive and rail industries. It said the corruption and self-serving interests of the regime and the Guard Corps have pushed Iran's economy to the brink. [1]

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said in a separate post on X that Iran's ability to fund its war machine and inflict terror on the world has been severely diminished by the operation. [2]

Bessent said the action targets what the post called Iran's enablers. He said it lays the groundwork for the United States and its partners to drain the regime's revenue "once and for all." [2]

The posts do not identify the specific companies, say what restrictions apply to them, or give figures on the economic effect. These are Treasury's characterizations of Iran's economy and of the role of the Revolutionary Guard. [1][2]
