The Chicago White Sox beat the Cleveland Guardians 4-3 on Monday at Progressive Field and took a 2-0 lead in the American League Division Series, putting them one win from the AL Championship Series.[1][2]

According to The Associated Press, Chicago has not reached the ALCS since winning the World Series in 2005. The White Sox are 4-0 in this postseason, all on the road. Game 3 is Wednesday afternoon in Chicago, where the AP said the team has a chance to clinch a postseason series at home for the first time since 1906.[2]

The game turned in the sixth inning. Cleveland led 2-1 when Braden Montgomery lined a two-run double down the right-field line for the go-ahead runs, the AP reported. Chase Meidroth followed with an RBI single that made it 4-2.[2]

Sean Burke, who entered with one out in the third inning, gave up one hit over 5 1/3 innings, struck out six and threw 83 pitches, the AP said. The right-hander retired 13 straight batters at one stretch. Burke was the winning pitcher. Erik Sabrowski took the loss.[1][2]

Grant Taylor pitched 1 1/3 innings for the save, allowing a run on an eighth-inning RBI triple by Jo Adell, per the AP. "They've been waiting 120 years, so maybe we can do it this year," Taylor said of the chance to clinch at home.[2]

Cleveland scored twice in the first inning on an RBI groundout and an error. Gavin Williams struck out 11 in the Guardians' start, the AP said, but the offense has now come up short in both games. Guardians manager Stephen Vogt said he has "a lot of faith in this offense."[2]

The AP also noted that Chicago is the first team to reach the postseason after three straight 100-loss seasons, including 121 losses in 2024.[2]
